The second class of the Laker Hall
of Honor was inducted into Detroit
Lakes High School immortality
Saturday, during the induction
ceremony held in the Historic Holmes
Theatre.

ceremony held in the Historic Holmes
Theatre.
Six more inductees were honored,
including Norris Johnson (1944-45),
Wally Walbaum (1949),
Ed Larson
(1964), Tom Evans (1973),
Anne
(Schiller) Riddle (1992) and the
1992 Laker football team, which went
14-0 and captured DL’s first-ever
team state championship.
Over 240 people attended the
ceremony Saturday after the class
enjoyed a Laker Homecoming victory
over Thief River Falls Friday in
DL’s football game on Mollberg
Field.
“The weekend was extremely
successful,” said Hall of Honor
committee member Mark Hagen. “The
inductees were able to reconnect
with past friends, it was a good
weekend.”
Preparations are already underway
for the third Laker Hall of Honor
class, which will be inducted in
2012.
Candidates are being considered,
with nominations welcomed by the
committee. Individuals can go to the
DL Athletic Foundation website (dlathleticfoundation.org)
to print out a nomination form.
Those eligible are DLHS
student-athletes who have graduated
at least 10 years ago and school
employees five years ago.
The 2008 Laker Hall of Honor class
included
Jack “Soup” Campbell class of 1953;
Rich Borstad class of 1954,
Andy Lia
class of 1959;
Dave Nelson class of
1970; JeNelle Johnson class of 1978;
Todd Jorgenson class of 1982;
Jeni (Jost)
Gunderson class of 1992,
Craig
Fredrickson class of 1996, and
Ralph
Anderson, legendary sportswriter for
the Detroit Lakes Newspapers.
Eligibility requirements to nominate
a former athlete/contributor
include:
The individual must have graduated
from Detroit Lakes High School and
participated in varsity athletics,
or the individual must have
participated in varsity athletics
for at least two years in the
Detroit Lakes School System. Or, the
individual must have made
significant contribution to the
long-term betterment of Laker
athletics.
The individuals scheduled graduation
must be a minimum of 10 years prior
to the nomination.
Varsity teams are eligible as a
whole group but no more than one
team can be honored with each
entrance group.
The individual must not be a current
employee of the school district or a
member of the Detroit Lakes Athletic
Foundation Board of Directors and
may not be considered for nomination
until five years after the
completion of his/her employment or
term.
The individual must be a
representative example of the
Detroit Lakes High School’s concept
of dedication and demonstrates high
qualities of character and
leadership.
DL Athletic Foundation Committee
members include Mark Hagen, Mike
Herzog, Jayne Thielen, Sue Portilla,
Kyle Neumeister, Rhonda Fode, Mitch
McLeod and Matt Hedstrom.
The DL Athletic Foundation was
developed for the maintenance and
improvement of DL athletics through
the use of endowment funds. The goal
is to raise money and pledges for an
ongoing endowment fund, with future
committees to provide continued
fundraising and yearly distribution
of the yield of invested funds.
All Laker sports will benefit from
the fund. |
